Similar to some other Jio products, there is a lot of confusion around the Jio set-top box. There is no clarity on the plans or pricing of the service, and that could mean two things: either the company is still unclear of its future plans for the set-top box or it is running quietly running a test run of the service. Earlier we have seen that Jio rarely talks about the pilot run of its services. The same is true for the Jio set-top box that is real and is actually reaching consumers for wider testing purposes.
There are a couple of media reports on the web claiming that the service is available to many users and offers more than 150 live TV channels. Again nothing has been confirmed by the company yet. However, India Today Tech has learnt that the set-top box exists and it has already been made available to most of the JioFiber users.
Jio set-top box is currently one of the most talked-about devices in the market. With not much information on it from the company, people are left puzzled with many users also felt betrayed as the company at the announcement of Jio GigaFiber had said that it would be giving set-top box free with the device. This was clearly not the case as Jio did not offer any set-top box during the pilot run of its broadband connection.
However, now the Jio set-top box comes free with a JioFiber connection. Consumers don't have to apply separately for the device. The company charges Rs 2500 at the time of installation of JioFiber out of which Rs 1000 is the installation charge and the rest Rs 1500 is the security deposit. You can return the set-top box at any point of time if you are not satisfied with the service.
Coming to the inclusions of JioFiber connection, JioFiber broadband the connection comes bundled with one landline connection without the device and one Jio set-top box.
The Jio set-top box is different from the conventional set-top box in regard to how it pairs with your TV. Jio set-top box turns a normal TV into a smart TV using its given functionalities.
Previously there were rumors that Jio set-top box would come pre-installed with JioTV app and offer over 650 Live TV channels but this is not the case, at least right now. Instead, the Jio set-top box turns your TV into a smart TV by running third-party OTT apps like Hotstar, Zee5 and likewise.
About the plans, there is no separate dedicated page for the Jio set-top box plans yet. To understand the plans, go to this link https://www.jio.com/fiber/en-in/plans and at the bottom of the table you will see a mention of set-top box which is included in all the JioFiber plans. This means no matter what plan you choose, the set-top box will come free with it. The Bronze and Silver plans come with a validity of 3 months while the rest of the plans offer an annual subscription. With the Bronze plan, you get access to only JioCinema and JioSaavn apps. The Silver, Gold, Diamond, Platinum, and Titanium plans offer a subscription to a range of OTT apps.
Note that Jio currently does not offer to access to Jio TV apps via set-top box which means subscribers will have to get a separate cable connection to access normal television channels like ZEE, Sony and likewise.
