Instagram’s Top Nine trend can delete your account, compromise user privacy

Instagram trends are widely followed by users across the world. One such trend that is widely followed around New Year’s time is the Top Nine trend. The Top Nine trend lets users post the best 9 photos of 2020 in a grid form. Instagram in collaboration with BetaLabs lets users create a photo grid. However, if you download the feature from other apps it can harm your Instagram account.

Creatorkit, which is the authorized platform on which the Top 9 app is made, has cautioned users about the fake apps that can damage their Instagram account and compromise privacy. “We receive messages from people saying that after they used our app their Instagram account username has been “hacked”, deleted, or modified. In fact, they were unknowingly using a fake tool thinking it’s our Top Nine tool. That’s one of the reasons why we chose to make it under the CreatorKit platform, on CreatorKit.com/TopNine.”

CreatorKit is urging users to only use the app that has been created by them and not any other developer that apes the Top Nine platform created by Creatorkit. The Top Nine trend surfaces around New Year’s Eve every year and it enables users to post their nine best photos. Other apps that are not authorized developers of Instagram can compromise users' data and even delete your account.

“The main goal is to make people more aware of the security issues that many of the Top Nine clones have, potentially exposing Instagram account credentials for millions of users who use these clones every year. If Top Nine is used by millions of users, we’re sure that these clones will have a similar amount. While it’s clear that we don’t want people to use fake clones, what really drives us to write this post is making the Internet a more secure place for everyone. We will take legal actions regarding their intellectual property infringement, but these actions require more time than what’s left before NYE,” Creatorkit said in the blog.

In case you do not know how to distinguish between a fake and genuine Top Nine app. Have a look at the browser address bar. If you can’t see the address bar, then there are chances that the app is not genuine because some of these fake apps don’t let you see whether you’re signing in to https://instagram.com or some other fake page that looks exactly like Instagram’s login page.
