Microsoft has paid an undisclosed sum for Clipchamp, a Web-based video editing application. On Tuesday, September 7, the tech behemoth announced the startup's acquisition in a blog post. Microsoft will be able to integrate Clipchamp's video editing technology with Windows and Microsoft 365 product offerings as a result of the deal. Clipchamp is already available as a Microsoft Store app.
In a blog post, Chris Pratley, Corporate Vice President, Office Media Group at Microsoft, said, "Clipchamp's technical approach is to combine the simplicity of a Web app with the ability to process video using the full computing power of a PC with graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration, something that was previously limited to traditional video applications." The acquisition's financial terms have not been made public.
Microsoft may be considering integrating Clipchamp with Office 365. "As a Web app that taps into the full power of your PC, Clipchamp is a natural fit to extend the cloud-powered productivity experiences in Microsoft 365 for individuals, families, schools, and businesses," Pratley continued.
Clipchamp accelerates the rendering of clips by using the GPU acceleration of a computer. For social media posts, gaming clips, and educational purposes, it has a variety of templates, filters, transitions, stock media, and styles. It supports multi-track audio editing as well as video compositing. The Web app also allows you to record your screen and webcam.
In a blog post, Clipchamp CEO and co-founder Alexander Dreiling announced the decision to sell the app to Microsoft.
